“Summertime, and the living is easy….”

There are two types of time in the Christian worldview: “Chronos”, which is time as measured on a clock or a watch: “real time” in minutes and hours at their rate; and “Kairos”, which is like “holy time”: Time that goes faster than it says on the clock or time that slows to a crawl, because it’s special time: “Time flies when you’re having fun”, “every second is agony while you wait for a phone call” and “time stood still while he talked” are all examples of Kairos’ bending of time. These are about how time feels, often in relation to someone or some thing else.

Fishing, kite flying, time reading a book, a good conversation, or a baseball game are all examples of Kairos time. There is no “real action” at all times, there is no “boom” involved, there is no death and destruction. It’s not the Grand Prix. There is just simple connection – with another person, or God, or both.

I hope to move from Chronos to Kairos this summer, even while Chronos exists. My schedule will change this summer from the “regular grind”. I still have goals for the summer – work on the bylaws, finding a new Moderator/Council President, prepare for worship, etc. Mostly, though, I want to spend time with you in conversation at a visit, or in what is called “S’mores worship” around a campfire at the church, or – at the Men’s Group’s suggestion – a New Britain Bees baseball game.
